Associate, Orton- Gillingham Academy

Proudly hailing from Paris, Illinois I attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana where I graduated with my bachelors of science in Recreation and Sports Management, with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation. As department chair I worked with amazing teams of speech, occupational and physical therapists, psychologists, nurses and doctors in Rehabilitation Hospitals. Providing recreational opportunities and community reintegration for individuals with disabilities and their families. As our family grew, I worked to fit what our life needed at the time, as my husband was in graduate school and we had started our family.  Fast forward past the marathons of diapers, naps ( no naps,) meals, car pool lines, and play dates that feel like yesterday. We get both boys in elementary school K and 4th. This not without concern of red flags that our youngest was not meeting all of the "benchmarks" for school.  I took much of it up for him being a "boy" who wants to be hands on as he was understanding the information. I ended up following my gut and getting additional testing ( now in 3rd grade) after years of working with teachers, speech therapists and much data collection on behalf of the school. The recommendation was to find someone who teaches by the The Orton-Gillingham Approach. I had never heard of this, even though it is has been around since the 1930's! I thankfully found a tutor in the Savannah area.

After our son had attended tutoring with Casey Welsh for over three years I was intrigued to find out why this approach was different as it was life changing for our family.

I began my Associates training in 2016 with Fellow Sheila Costello here in Savannah, GA. As soon as I had submitted my application to the academy for review I jumped into begin the certified level  of training,

Currently I am in the process of working on my observations so that I will be able to apply in the coming  year for promotion. I  am learning something new every day and I hope to share my enthusiasm of learning with you. If you find you need individualized support for reading and decoding the English language, please reach out and let me know how I can be of assistance.
